Update 01/28/2019 – Thanks to the support of our amazing community, we were able to raise over $4,300 in Commissary and Safeway gift cards, which are being taken to Bangor/Kitsap today. We have been so honored to be able to organize such an effort to support other military families. Although the OSCWI is no longer collecting, if you would like to continue to support Coast Guard families in this way, you may donate through the USO.
From the OSCWI President:
I am emailing today to call your attention to other military families in need. As you know, the government is in partial shutdown and the US Coast Guard is not currently being paid. Although we don’t have Coast Guard personnel at NASWI, local Naval Base Bangor/Kitsap has about 100 Coast Guard Personnel and their families. As it is part of our mission to support our spouses and support our community, I feel we have the opportunity to extend a hand and help these fellow military families who may be struggling to make ends meet during their postponed paychecks. This base has done many things to help these families, but the families could use some extra support.
I have been able to reach out to an administrator of the Coast Guard Bangor/Kitsap Community Facebook page who got me in touch with their Command Master Chief. I have received a mailing address on base and a list of what they currently need. They are asking for infant formula, diapers, feminine napkins, and all types of food. However, it may be more helpful to donate grocery gift cards to be distributed to their four units on base so families can buy what they need.
If you are able to help, please consider purchasing gift cards (with amounts in $20 increments) to either Safeway or the Commissary and dropping off the cards or other items at one of the three locations listed below [removed 01/28/2019]. If you prefer, you can also make a monetary donation toward this effort, and OSCWI board members will purchase cards with your donation.
As this is a time sensitive project, we will be collecting these items by Saturday, January 26th and delivering them to the Bangor Base on Monday, January 28th.
If you feel comfortable sharing this information to other military friends who are looking to help please feel free to forward this email and my contact information.
It is truly an honor to be able to reach out to you and organize an effort to help support other military families. Thank you in advance for all your help and allowing the OSCWI to be a group that can make a difference in our community.
Sincerely,
Teresa Leisenring
OSCWI President
